    Testimonials

    Testimonials

See what our guests have said about The Gipsy Hill Hotel.

    Rooms

"Our room was spacious and comfortable, a perfect weekend break which we both enjoyed so very much. The welcome from the staff was friendly and genuine, a real home away from home".

"I recently spent a weekend at this hotel as part of a group of 10 people. The hotel was in a good setting with lovely views, and the room was clean and comfortable, as were the other areas of the hotel. Despite the cold miserable weather the hotel was warm. The staff were all very friendly and welcoming, and anxious to make sure we had everything we needed. The food was delicious, but you need a good appetite to stay here as the portions are definitely on the generous side! I would certainly visit again and would recommend to friends."

"My husband booked us a romantic valentines night away and living only 20 miles away, I'm sad to say I didn't know this place existed! Fantastic room, well decorated and good amenities. Best food I have had in a long time. Staff were wonderful and nothing was too much trouble.
Thank you for such a lovely night away from normality!"

"It was £65 for a double room for the night and I wasn't expecting much but upon entering I was taken aback. The reception was presentable ad the member of staff who greeted us was really polite. Upon Getting to the room, the size took me totally by surprise. The best nights sleep I've had in a long time!"

    Dining

"5* food in a 3* hotel, I can only say wow!! We will be back".

"The food I had in the evening on my arrival was delicious...garlic mushrooms on toast, which were very tasty, followed by the Fish Dish of the Day, a mixture of salmon, sea fish and mussels with vegetables in a creamy sauce topped with a pastry slice...absolutely yummy and for a very reasonable price. The breakfast in the morning was also good, with staff taking my hot food order promptly and efficiently after being seated and offered the cold buffet of cereals and fruit. Staff were very friendly and, given I was eating by myself, it was nice to engage in some chat whilst waiting for the hot food."

"Nice friendly atmosphere Have already recommended to friends excellent food in the restaurant, Outstanding Staff. Nice wildlife in the gardens Will come again."

    General Comments

"I call in here very occasionally for an after-work drink and it is superb. Right next to the new Redhayes cycle bridge over the M5, about 3 miles from the city centre. It's a hotel, so you have your pint in seclusion, admiring the extensive views over the east Devon countryside, stretching away into the distance. The staff are very polite and welcoming. A brilliant place!"

"The location and friendliness of the staff was superb. I was a lone traveler so had my evening meal in the restaurant. The food was lovely and the staff were very pleasant. I was happy to sit and watch the bunnies hopping around the garden whilst eating my meal."

"Friendly and very helpful staff. Upgraded to 4 poster bedroom as they weren't very busy. How nice of them - a real plus. Lovely gardens with various wildlife to watch. Excellent restaurant with lovely food. Nothing is too much trouble. Super breakfast too. Very relaxing. Would return and recommend to others."

Set in three acres of well established gardens, guests can escape the hustle and bustle of city life, with al fresco dining and drinks being popular in the warmer months.

    History

Originally built in 1895 as a private county residence, the area was incredibly attractive to the wealthy elite with it's proximity to the sea and the stunning views across the Devon countryside. The original owner was a rich merchant and introduced rare horticultural specimens into the garden, many of which can still be enjoyed by today's visitors. The Gipsy Hill's elevated position enabled the original owner views of incoming ships. During the war the house was utilized as a barracks for British, American and Polish airmen but in
1946 the building was remodeled as a country house hotel. Since then it has grown in size and attracted high profile visitors such as Sir Cliff Richard,John Major and Noel Edmunds to name but a few.

The nearest community is the archetypal Devon village of Pinhoe. The name most likely derives from the Celtic 'Pen' and the Saxon 'Hoe' which translates as 'top of the hill'; indeed the church, first built in 926, is the highest point of the village and commands striking views across Exeter to Exmouth, Dartmoor and beyond.

During 1001 the village was invaded by the Danes who conquered the Saxon King Ethelred the unready in a major battle very near the site of the current church. Later in the early 18th century, the Great Storm of 1703, wrecked the vicarage of Pinhoe. Arguably one of the most damaging natural disasters to ever hit Southern Britain, this storm was responsible for an estimated 15,000 deaths across the West Country region. Many of those lost were seamen returning from fighting the French in the War of the Spanish Succession.

Historical finds in the village date back to the Roman era with many coins and relics found, along with large amounts of Bronze Age metalwork, with many items being discovered within the hotel's own extensive grounds.
